Reverence

Crochet, Pvc

2025

Crochet is feminine, soft and easily unravelled; this medium controlled the narrative of the piece ‘Reverence’. While influenced by the architecture of Bath, Jones looked to less physically intrusive methods for recording the heavy stone historic buildings. Historical narrative is a consistent thread in her work, drawing on archives to discover treasures in the places we all inhabit. The floor plans of Bath Abbey are recorded in a white, pure curtain, which appears diaphanous. The blend of femininity, architecture, and religion is expressed through a barrier, used as protection and shielding, finding strength in fragility. The domesticity of this work, having a literal use and serving a heavy purpose in Jones’s studio, adds to the conversations of whether fibre works are ‘art’. The practicality of this piece is simply a by product of making and supplying an object with conceptual understanding and narrative, and then situating it in place.
